Course Textbook: The Bible

As a course on the Catholic interpretation of the Gospel of St. John a Catholic edition of the Bible will be required. Probably the best translation is the Revised Standard Version, Catholic Edition although the New American Bible is good and the Douay-Rheims Bible, while a bit archaic in translation, is also good. (The Douay-Rheims can be found online at http://www.e-sword.net/bibles.html along with several other versions. But please remember that a Catholic edition is to be preferred.)

Course Description:

This class will focus on the historical, literary and theological aspects of the Gospel of St. John. Given the time constraints we will not be able to cover the entire Gospel but will be selecting several important passages in order to give you a general sense of the Evangelist’s message about Jesus Christ.

After completing the course the student should have an informed theological understanding of key passages of the Gospel of St. John in light of Catholic tradition. The student should also be able to apply the selected texts in a meaningful way to their own lives.
